In my recent holiday trip to New York, I visited the famed establishment Tiffany’s on 5th avenue. Naturally, as any of you would do, as I was going through its door, I couldn’t help but to think of the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I was greeted first by the always-polished personnel who were wearing their Tiffany’s scarves, and second by the gleaming jewelry…

Aiming to visit the home department on the fourth floor, going up the elevator I was greeted again by the old-fashioned and polite elevator attendant…

An exquisite holiday table setting with all the gifts wrapped beautifully just ready for you to buy

Well… at the end of my visit I didn’t buy jewelry, china or silver, but… I purchased a book titled Breakfast at Tiffany's: The Official 50th Anniversary Companion from the nearby Rizzoli bookstore.

The book celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the making of the movie, highlighting all the details. In one of its chapters, it discusses the interiors of the movie as you can see below.

The Mona Lisa Framed

As the New Year begins, I would like to extend my thanks and offer my gratitude to all the readers who have followed Picture of Elegance, where pictures that tell a story are showcased.

Courtesy of the Smithsonian Channel, I would like to share this video titled The Many Layers of the Mona Lisa.

To protect and enhance any painting there is always the relationship between art and its frame. In an old issue of House & Garden, there was an article that highlighted the famed Mona Lisa painting by Leonardo Da Vinci; it was shown in different European frames.

The framing process usually starts by knowing the period, the country and region of the painting. All the frames above were available during the era when the Mona Lisa was created.

I love the simplicity of the neoclassical style, which is the gold French frame of Louis XVI (last image), it adds more emphasis on the painting itself.

Season’s Greenings in D.C.

I would like to share with you photos of the National Botanic Gardens, which is a living plant museum in Washington D.C. In celebrating the holiday season, the garden is displaying one of the largest indoor Christmas trees; in addition, you can see many of the landmarks were recreated from plants.

Pine cones, willow acorns caps, and grapevine tendrils were used to create these amazing buildings by designer and landscape architect Paul Busse.The frame was created from acrylic based foam, the walls were finished with sand grout, and plants were used to make the architectural details.

The U.S. Capitol took about 600 hours to build

The Gingerbread White House

While I was shopping for Christmas gifts this year, a new book titled Christmas with the First Ladies caught my attention, written by Coleen Christian Burke and forwarded by Deborah Norville.

This book includes the First Ladies’ Christmas stories from Jacqueline Kennedy to Michelle Obama, as well as sweet recipes for the holidays.

I enjoyed reading about the creation of the gingerbread house, which is usually the most eagerly awaited part of the traditional Christmas experience at the White House. This tradition was started by Pat Nixon in 1971, and it continues today.

My personal favorite is the gingerbread White House replica made by pastry chef Bill Yosses in 2009. It was covered with white chocolate, and included Michelle Obama’s vegetable garden.

As you can see, the room was filled with dark chocolate furniture, and lit with a dollhouse chandelier

Timeless

Every time I see this picture, I think my heart skips a beat…The bedroom was designed for Vincent Friia in San Francisco by the design legend Albert Hadley and the late designer Gary Hager.

What I love about it…the room showcased classical bones of the architecture and the furniture. The drama that was created by the contrast between the architectural drawings and the furniture against the rich saturated lacquered green walls, and the soft curtains against the wooden blinds. The use of scale, balance, harmony and order was clearly present in this room.

A true gentleman’s room where classic elegance take precedence.

It’s Pure Geometry

Designers are constantly inspired from exposure to culture, original artwork, architecture, or nature. Whether it’s fashion or interior design… a concept always needs to be applied to the design process.

When Yves Saint Laurent designed the revolutionary ‘Mondrian’ day dress as part of the Fall/ Winter collection in 1965-66, he was inspired by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.

Hotel Stories

We all love to read good stories of our favorite famous figures that explore where they travel, where they stay, and why. In these stories, the travel lives of writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald or Ernest Hemingway, movie stars like Clint Eastwood, or politicians like the Kennedys, are unveiled while simultaneously exploring the interiors and the exteriors of legendary hotels they stayed in.

Many of these stories are told in a wonderful book titled American Hotel Stories, by Francisca Mattéolli (the book was a lovely gift from my children).

There is the story of Alfred Hitchcock who directed Vertigo in the fifties, which was, as you all know, filmed in San Francisco. During the filming, Hitchcock chose to stay at the Fairmont hotel.

The book highlights the interiors of the famed penthouse suite at the Fairmont hotel as it looks today-- although it’s not clear whether Hitchcock stayed at the suite or not.

The penthouse suite was originally built in 1926 as a residence that took up a whole floor. It has three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a living room, and a dining room that could seat over fifty people. The suite also has a billiard room and a library.

An oval tall room filled with books that are accessible with a painted ceiling of constellations drawings. It’s not only a library but a place to socialize

Decorative Arts from the White House

A new exhibition opened yesterday at the Renwick Gallery, which is part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The exhibit is filled with amazing collections of decorative arts and historic furnishings that tell the stories of the White House past, highlighting periods of the American interior design at the White House.

Some of the Blue Room’s seating was on display. I especially loved the side chair, which is painted birch from 1902, was made by L. Marcotte & Company of New York.

It was part of a set that originally had cane back, but was later upholstered in the mid 1920’s

Mrs. Kennedy’s Bedroom

In an attempt to create a warm and inviting feeling for her husband and children at the White House, Jacqueline Kennedy requested the help of the famed decorator Mrs. Henry Parish II, well known as Sister Parish, in decorating their private quarters.

In response to Jackie’s desire to recreate her old bedroom from their previous home in Georgetown, Sister Parish designed a room that continued the same feel, which was comfortable and casually elegant.

Although both the President and the first lady used the room, the feminine touch was apparent and primarily it was her space, as the president had his own bedroom.

Dior at Versailles

When the ambitious Louis XIV decided to transform his father’s hunting lodge into a monument that symbolized the royal power, he surprised the people and built Versailles mostly as we know today.

I had the pleasure of visiting Versailles a long time ago and one of the most stunning rooms in there is the Hall of Mirrors, which was designed by the French architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart. Mansart transformed what was originally a terrace into a spectacular space. It has seventeen dazzling arched windows that offer spectacular views that are reflected in the parallel seventeen beveled mirrors.

So now, it’s Dior’s time to surprise the world with their new fragrance ad in the Hall of Mirrors. The ad was launched a few days ago…Check out Dior's website.

Whenever I’m in New York City, one of my favorite shops to visit is Treillage, which is a store owned by the famed designer Bunny Williams and her husband antiques dealer John Rosselli. There you can be assured to find the most elegant and the unique, whether it’s furniture, accessories, or garden ornaments.

Keith Irvine’s English Arrival

One of the most beautiful home entrances featured on the cover of House & Garden magazine was designed by Keith Irvine.

The house was located in the upper east side of Manhattan, and the owners were looking for a certain living style. After considering many designers, the design legend Irvine, known for his English country style, was chosen to create the interiors.

Following into the footsteps of architect Robert Adam, Irvine emphasized classic detailed ornaments and designed the plaster dome where the ceiling crowned the circular stairs.

Irvine wanted to create drama and astonish guests as they enter the house, so he emphasized the architecture, and the scale, color and pattern of the famed hand blocked wallpaper Pembroke Damask to create the perfect background. The colors evoke the feeling of warmth and happiness, an introduction to the ambiance of the home.

Grace Kelly at Home

In anticipation of the upcoming royal wedding on July 1-2 of Prince Albert of Monaco and Charlene Wittstock. Grace Kelly must be on her son’s mind. We know her for her beauty, talent, style, and grace-- and decades after her passing Kelly continues to fascinate us and remains a star.

I thought I’d follow her journey and visit her homes from Pennsylvania to the palace in Monaco.

While attending the Cannes film festival, Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III met while Kelly was touring the palace in May of 1955. This is where their love story began, and in January of 1956 they were engaged, and married in April of the same year.

A Balanced Act

Two living rooms, two admired interior designers: David Hicks and Thomas O’Brien

While looking at these photos, you’ll see two rooms with the same concept. The emphasis is placed on the focal point, the fireplace, by creating two sides of the room that are almost identical. You’ll see the perfect scale of furniture, and a symmetrical composition.

Hicks created more movement in his space through the art, sculptures, and textures. The yellow filled the room with some energy…

O’Brien created the classic modern monochromatic look by focusing on one neutral color. It all blends very well and very discreetly.

Hicks and O’Brien brought the modern touch to their interiors, and they both achieved quite formal balance, creating soft relaxing schemes that are exciting at the same time.

Life After Sunset

Last week I purchased a new fascinating book titled Paris: Life & Luxury in the Eighteenth Century. If you’re intrigued by the French decorative arts during the mid- eighteenth century, then this is the book for you.
One of the chapters discusses visibility after dark and covers how the wealthy Parisians experienced their rooms before electricity.
Aside from controlling the natural light during the day with the size of windows, curtains filtered the daylight, and light was magnified by the use of mirrors.

At night Parisians relied on crystal chandeliers for general light, wall sconces to make up for the pools of darkness, glass covered lanterns in drafty rooms, and portable candelabras and candlesticks to move light from one room to another. They also depended on the reflection of the gilded furniture, as well as glittering objects and mirrors.

When you think about it, it may seem romantic with all the candle lighting, but keeping a well-lit room then required a lot of candle maintenance by trimming the wicks- and the direction of light needed constant navigation.

Mark Hampton’s Vision: A Mark of Excellence

I was excited to find an old article about one of Mark Hampton’s projects in southern Florida in an old issue of Architectural Digest. The home (or I should say mansion) was in British colonial style, and the project was a collaboration between Hampton and architect Charles Pawley.

The chosen powerful color combinations for the interiors were influenced by the location of the mansion, the hot climate, the natural light, the landscape, and the clients’ personal preferences.

While enjoying the images you’ll see that each room commands your attention through the unique atmosphere it creates. A unified look ties together a series of colors schemes, and creates an effortless flow from one room to another. In the end, all rooms work together as a whole.

The Goring Hotel

While listening to the news, it caught my attention that Kate Middleton will be spending the last night before her wedding to Prince William at the five star luxury hotel The Goring. Designer Tim Gosling, about whose projects I have written a couple of posts, was at one point involved in redesigning the hotel.

Afternoon Tea

Being a confirmed tea drinker, I have to start my day with a hot cup of tea. I think it’s a wonderful way to start and break the day, a time to slow down, or maybe conduct business over afternoon tea. However, with busy lives and schedules, does the afternoon tea ritual still exist?

The ritual of afternoon tea started in England in 1840 when the seventh duchess of Bedford needed some refreshments between lunch and late dinner. So, she requested to have tea, bread, butter and cake in her room.

Later, society women in the Victorian era started dressing up in special gowns to enjoy their tea, sandwiches, and cake in the drawing room. Eventually, drinking the afternoon tea became a national pastime.

The pleasure of taking tea is still being honored in hotels, mansions, museums and tearooms around the world

If you’re a tea lover, I think you’ll enjoy reading a book titled Tea & Etiquette written by Dorothea Johnson the founder of The Protocol School of Washington and Bruce Richardson, the author of many books about tea.

This book takes a fresh look at the ritual, and directs you on how to take tea for business and pleasure—in addition to detailing tea history and tales. The back cover says: Forget about all those raised pinkies- teatime can be gracious without being pretentious.

Reaching High

In the eighteenth century, European nobility sought to expand their knowledge by studying literature, maps and touring countries around the world. Those travels led to accumulating books. Since books were more available, cabinetmakers started creating library furniture and built in bookcases to display the books in private homes, and in high ceiling rooms, ladders were a must.

Ladders come in different woods and finishes. By using them in interiors, it allows the use of every inch of the space. At the same time, it brings character, luxury, and maximizes storage where ever they are used:

An Artist Visits the White House Past

On view… a new exhibit that examines the lost world of the 19th century White House. The White House Historical Association commissioned fourteen paintings, and Peter Waddell is the artist.

In his paintings, Waddell delivers stories about the domestic scenes of a presidential life at the White House in the nineteenth century. His renderings and portrayal of historic interiors and exteriors are amazing where no detail was spared. According to the exhibit brochure: Rather than attempting to capture great events, Waddell decided to take odd moments in the presidential life at the White House.

The exhibit also offers a family activity guide, which engages children visiting the exhibit to discover the colors, the fashion, the pets, and the stories in the paintings.

Interiors of Tomorrow

Recently, I was reading about design legend Eleanor Brown, the founder of McMillen Inc., the famed New York design firm that was established in 1924 and is still in business today. Brown achieved recognition by designing the most prestigious homes in the country.

I was fascinated to learn that during the Depression, Eleanor Brown, upon the suggestion of fellow McMillen Grace Fakes, decided to create a series of miniature rooms. The models presented fully developed rooms for people to view and reflected the refinement of the McMillen design.

Upon completion, the rooms were first exhibited in 1932 at the McMillen firm headquarters, a townhouse. That mini presentation certainly left a big impact. The exhibit captured the attention of thousands of people who viewed the miniature rooms before going on tour to many North American cities. The tour was titled Interiors of Tomorrow.

McMillen’s progressive thinking was apparent by:

- Choosing to display models, a step to translate ideas into real materials, colors, and finishes. Brown and Fakes understood that people usually get a better sense of a project with three-dimensional models as compared to two-dimensional drawings.

- Moving around the country, displaying the work like a museum’s traveling exhibition, and promoting their designs and business in a relaxed informal manner. A traveling show house, so to speak…

- Keeping its valued employees who worked hard to create the miniature rooms- none of the staff was laid off throughout the Depression.

- Donating revenue generated by the exhibit to charities.

I wonder- are these rooms still on display at McMillen’s?

The Linear Look

I came across this photo of fashion designer Monique Lhuillier’s dining room. When entering the room, you’ll see a confident, contemporary look with an emphasis on smooth linear lines. There are several different heights of objects, one thing leading to another- from side chairs to the dining table, then to console table and art, and lastly the moulding. All contribute to a continuous flow of the eye.

Some of the hallmarks of classic contemporary design are shown through the incorporation of geometric shapes, mirrors, Lucite (see the dining table’s legs), recessed lighting, and an overall emphasis on one color in different shades and textures.

This purely Greek invention has the timeless, graceful, and refined look that never goes out of style. Down the Aisle

With Prince William and Kate Middleton’s nuptials close approaching, most of us are waiting to see the happy ending of a love story, and how glamorous the event will be- from the wedding dress to the ceremony and reception.

How to compose a table setting fit for royalty? Well, it has to be a formal setting set symmetrically, and all the decoration- candles, cards, and flowers- should create visual harmony and balance.

So, I started the hunt for images of previous famed weddings, whether royal or not… All the brides in these images knew the subtle power of presentation, from dress to table setting. They all shared the magic of the exquisite understated elegance.

Mario Buatta’s Romantic Interiors

Although known as the Prince of Chintz for his love of using Chintz fabrics in his interiors, I would like to call interior designer Mario Buatta, if I may… the Master of Color. Famed for his English country style interiors that are influenced by the 18th and 19th centuries, Buatta’s rooms are timeless; they suggest comfort, formality, and informality at the same time.

His mastery in using color is profound- where the rooms are the subject matter, he is the artist. His color application to interiors will surely elevate your mood by the use of both saturated and delicate colors in striking composition.

To some he might be considered old fashioned, but to me his rooms are a cheerful reference to history.

Last week I visited The Hay–Adams Hotel, which is situated in one of the most prestigious locations in Washington D.C.: just across from the White House on Lafayette Park. The site was once the residence of John Hay and Henry Adams before the hotel was built in 1928. Hay was the private secretary to President Lincoln, and Adams was the great grandson of President John Adams.

Boutique hotels usually refer to a certain style or signature, and seem more personal and distinctive. In this case, the words history and tradition come to mind when you visit the hotel, which is what you would expect.

I wanted to see the new face of the hotel since it recently went through a series of renovations. The hotel’s new rooftop is titled Top of the Hay and is currently in the final stages of the renovation process. It is planned to open at the beginning of February, and will only be used for special functions. I thought it might open as a restaurant…

For now, I can only imagine the wonderful views of Washington D.C. that will be seen, including the White House and the soaring Washington monument in the background…whether it’s day or night!

Jackie’s Dressing Room

Upon Jacqueline Kennedy’s arrival to the White House in 1961, she sought to transform the president’s house into a house that represented culture and taste…so the restoration process began.

Among the rooms that were transformed were the private quarters of the Kennedy family. Taking a cue from their previous townhouse in Georgetown, Jacqueline wanted to retain that same look for her new bedroom at the White House.

The prominent decorator Sister Parish was initially invited to decorate the private quarters and later, the French designer Stéphane Boudin of Maison Jansen added the French touch on the interiors.

As you can see in the image above, the door on the right led to the dressing room, which was transformed by Boudin.

The bedroom’s blue and white colors were continued in the dressing room, and in order to make a statement and add magic, a trompe l’oeil painting was incorporated to cover the doors of Jackie’s built-in wardrobe closet. The paintings represented images from important moments of Jackie’s life.

Bathroom Panache

In ancient Greece, wealthy people who lived in large houses had the luxury of having bathrooms inside their homes. Bathrooms were generally placed close to the kitchen so that the stove would be nearby, which would make it easier to bring hot water into the bathroom. Baths then had terracotta seats and stone basins on pedestals.

I recently came across a photo of a bathroom designed by Nicholas Calder which I loved. It had a wonderful mix and reference to the ancient and the new. A mix of finishes of both rough and smooth… you can see the stone or maybe textured granite sink on a column accented by mirrors, which enlarged the room, duplicated the accessories, and displayed all sides of the column and light.

Perhaps a Greek bath with a modern twist.

I call December the month of preparations. Between the shopping for gifts, sending Christmas greeting cards, decorating the Christmas tree and home, attending parties… it can really feel like a marathon. Still, the best part of the season is the sweet and warm feeling you get when people come together for celebrations, not forgetting the importance of charity.

Perhaps best of all is seeing the joy of the season in the twinkling eyes of the children while they are untying ribbons and unwrapping gifts with smiles on their faces. Come to think of it-I think we all have this feeling; we’re all kids on Christmas morning!

Audrey Hepburn at Home

One of the best cover shots for Architectural Digest was for the March 2006 issue. The shot was of Audrey Hepburn in her home in California, for the “Hollywood at Home” issue, where an article highlighted the domestic life of a beloved actress who was the epitome of elegance and style. The images shared were from the period when Audrey was married to the actor and director Mel Ferrer.

While preparing for this post and reading about their lives, I thought I’d follow their journey from the beginning and visit their homes too. I hope you’ll enjoy it!

In 1954, Hepburn and Ferrer were married in a little Swiss town of Buochs.

Between projects, the married couple loved visiting Europe, Switzerland, and France in particular.

By the year 1958, the couple began to look for a home, and they found Villa Bethiana in the Swiss town of Bürgenstock, which was close to the village where they were married. They stayed there until after their son Sean was born. Hepburn enjoyed motherhood at the house she loved.

While working in Hollywood, the couple needed a home-in the AD article written by Mel Ferrer, he mentioned the need to have a “home away from home.” The couple rented houses in Malibu and Beverly Hills.

Hepburn and Ferrer’s last home was at La Paisible, an eighteen-century country house in Switzerland surrounded by rose gardens. Hepburn decorated the house, preferring the subtle colors of whites with accents of blue and green. To Audrey, it was the simple, peaceful, and perfect house where she resided for the rest of her life.

Designing Tomorrow

Designing Tomorrow is the title of one of the current exhibitions at the National Building Museum in Washington. The exhibit highlights six world fairs in the United States between 1933 and 1940, which was attended by millions of visitors.

I took the exhibit tour yesterday and the presentation by the docent was fascinating and very engaging. The tour covered many topics, which only scratched the surface of the abundance of ideas, innovations, and products that were introduced at the fairs of the 30’s.

At the exhibit, you’ll see images and examples of furniture, technologies, and residential designs (which leaned more toward open floor plans), all intertwined to present how the future will look like.

According to one of the fair guidebooks then, it stated that the architects, engineers, and designers were “the true poets of the twentieth century,” since they brought a hopeful vision of the modern world filled with new ideas.

Alexa Hampton: Her Father’s Daughter

The saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” certainly applies to the accomplished interior designer, artist, and lecturer Alexa Hampton, the daughter of the late design legend Mark Hampton.

In her recently published book The Language of Interior Design, Hampton highlights her classical aesthetic by showcasing a design style that follows her father’s footsteps. She embraces classic traditions with a touch of modern, which will always stand the test of time.

The tour that you get from reading this book takes you into the finest homes where you see Hampton’s approach in a thoughtful, clear, organized way--making sure that her clients get what they want.

What I love about the book, in addition to the exquisite interiors, is her portrayal of her projects with respect to every decision and every choice made, always keeping in mind the elements and principles of interior design as a guide.

The book starts and ends with a touching tribute to her father Mark Hampton and to his enormous influence on her life.

Orange Pumpkin

While preparing today’s post and going through countless images of interiors, two classic inspirational rooms caught my eye.

The late Melanie Kahane designed the first room. In the first half of the twentieth century when designers leaned more toward restrained color schemes for interiors, designer Melanie Kahane used the fearless color combination of black and white and pumpkin in designing her famous French provincial bedroom. Kahane certainly distinguished herself and captured the public’s attention, since at that time this room was frequently photographed.

Jeffrey Bilhuber, who is known for using bold color choices and for his chic well-appointed spaces, designed the second room below. Bilhuber used the pumpkin color on walls and curtains, bringing warmth into the space. It works beautifully with black and white, and creates a powerful palette.

I think both rooms make a statement. By placing the colors in a certain sequence, it declared confidence and sophistication. What do you think?

Glamour at the Museum

I frequently love to visit the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C. The building has three levels of exhibits that capture fascinating stories from the past.

One of the exhibits that constantly intrigues, and where you will always find lines, is the First Ladies exhibit. There, you’ll find stories of the first ladies told through their gowns.

One of my favorite gowns on display is Jacqueline Kennedy’s off-white gown that she wore to the 1961 inaugural ball. The gown is sleeveless with silk chiffon over silver embroidered peau d’ange. Ethel Frankau of Bergdorf custom salon designed this gown based on Jacqueline’s suggestions. The gown is delicate, simple, and chic, which reflected Jackie’s choice of the polished style. Her fashion choices proved to be influential to this day.

Reflections

For centuries, people have enjoyed and feared mirrors at the same time. At one point, there was the belief that seeing your image means seeing the reflection of your soul.

I was reading Dorothy Draper’s book Decorating Is Fun!, in which she discussed a case study of a timid lady who lived with her elderly mother who decided to redo her living room after her mother’s passing. After a failed first trial, she redesigned the whole room with soft colored walls and curtains, reupholstered the furniture, and added crystal lamps. She also had the wall opposite the windows partly covered with mirrors. After the room was done, she passed by the mirror and caught a gloomy glimpse of herself, which she didn’t like. She saw a tired soul.

Since she loved her new living room so much she decided to change herself. Draper wrote: “If the room didn’t fit her she would fit herself to the room.”Changing her surroundings pushed her to change her look, her attitude and her life.

Designers have always used strategic placement of mirrors in interiors to expand the space visually and multiply light. Well- designed spaces always contribute to our sense of well being.

Mirrors are also used to cover surfaces sometimes to hide imperfections, and sometimes merely for aesthetic reasons. I think the use of mirrors requires careful planning and should be done tastefully or in an expected way- otherwise it could defeat the purpose and turn the room into unsophisticated space.

How The House Was Lit

Light has always been considered a tool of art and design and has been used to create dramatic effects to bring life to interiors, as well as exteriors.

In the images below, designer Tim Gosling succeeded in focusing attention where needed, and created pools of light softly flowing in the garden space. In doing so, Gosling used a key design principle: rhythm. Through repetition, he accented the architecture and the windows with spotlights, and created movement for the observer.

A Love for Books

I grew up in a home where education, and along with that collecting books, took precedence. My father had an extensive library of books that covered different topics and passions. My father, who was rarely without a book in hand, instilled my love for reading, and the constant desire to hunt for books.

In design, books are considered details that reflect the owner’s taste and interests. Designers always seek to display books in an unexpected way- whether in a bookcase, on a table, a chair, or simply on the floor. Stack them according to color, size, or subject and let the books speak volumes.

Saladino’s Muse

I’m aware that I keep referring to John Saladino’s work in my posts- aside from my admiration for his inspiring interiors, studying his work helps me to understand his thinking process and his point of view.

In a House & Garden article that was published in June 1998, a Colorado home that was put into the capable hands of Saladino was showcased. The owners were avid collectors who needed a guiding hand in designing their home to house their various antiquities, which ranged from Greek, Roman, and Egyptian origins to Japanese screens and Art Deco furniture.

Saladino managed to set the stage for all their antiquities by remodeling the house, and successfully left his own stamp. He created a refined look with a soft palette of grey, off-white, beige, brown, and pale blue- with emphasis on light. He produced a house that was extremely personal that reflected what the owners wanted: a tranquil home filled with treasures.

Embroidered Chinoiserie

Today I would like to share with you this panoramic scene of flowering trees and birds designed by Fromental, a company well known for painting and restoring historic wallpaper.

This hand-painted traditional Chinoiserie wallpaper was created before the embroidery process had been developed. Imagine spending hundreds of hours stitching single panels of wallpaper with colorful silk and metallic threads…I can only imagine the level patience and artistry required--all for the love of beauty and elegance.

Hodgins Style

What’s fascinating about the work of the prominent interior designer William Hodgins is that he always successfully mixes and matches furniture styles and fabrics that add notable touches to his exquisite residential interiors.

Hodgins was educated at The Parsons School of Design in New York. He later honed his skills under the direction of Sister Parish and Albert Hadley before starting his own firm in Boston in 1968. He is an award -winning designer well known for his sophisticated designs.

His mastery in creating classic, harmonious rooms comes from his ability to produce the sense of balance and order in his interiors where blending is the key. Hodgins’ signature style comes from his avoidance of the use of patterned fabrics, and instead emphasizing on rich textures, cream colors, painted furniture, garden sculptures, architectural elements, while placing great importance on light in his rooms.

House Beautiful best described his style, when it said, “His rooms speak for themselves with a whisper, not a shout.” That’s so true…

Art By The Yard

The impact of World War II brought changes into the post-war design world. Since color, materials, and patterns were limited during the war until the early fifties, the door was opened to artists and designers who were inspired by growing modernism to create an optimistic atmosphere through their work.

The Textile Museum in Washington D.C. is currently highlighting this optimism by displaying the work of British textile designers Lucienne Day, Jacqueline Groag, and Marian Mahler. These designers used abstract design, musical notes, bold colors, and flower motifs as an inspiration and created fabrics that certainly had a visual impact on mid-century interiors.

Seaside Retreats

While looking at this photo in which Jacqueline and the late President John F. Kennedy watch the 1962 American Cup races in Newport, Rhode Island, I thought that the captured moment must have been pure and refreshing.

There is something to be said about living on the seaside or remembering one’s first arrival to the sea. There is a sense of liberation, the permission we give ourselves to relax and unplug. Some of my fondest memories with my family were spent at the beach.

When creating interiors for coastal living, I think of casual, crisp, non-cluttered rooms with a touch of modern- a place where you can feel comfortable and where you wouldn’t have to worry about your surroundings.
I guess in my own way, with Labor Day fast approaching I’m trying to say goodbye to the summer!

Moroccan Ingredients

Morocco, the African country that is rich with history and culture, has a certain intrigue that has captured the attention of artists, filmmakers, travelers, as well as interior designers. Perhaps it’s the exotic and decorative details of their architecture, pottery, wood works, and textiles.

Understating the culture helps us understand how people used design and color as a mode of communication. For example, influenced by ancient Egypt, Moroccans painted their doors and windows in bright blue in order to keep the evil spirits away, believing that the color would keep evil spirits away from their homes.

The French Apartment

The historic neighborhood of Georgetown in Washington, D.C. never disappoints. You constantly notice new details and new shops that you haven’t paid attention to before. Last week I discovered the charming store The French Apartment.

Walking through the door, I was greeted by romantic, gentle rooms with white walls, filled with antiques ,vintage French furniture, lighting, and accessories. The setting was beautifully layered with pieces that were reasonably priced, exactly what we need in the new world order we’re living in! Enjoy, and have a wonderful weekend.

Ceramic Art

I’ve been noticing lately in certain design magazines some rooms were featured with walls that are covered with the traditional Portuguese tiles.

Azulejos is the Portuguese signature tile; they were used in the past to cover palaces, churches, homes, and public spaces. It has been the Portuguese method of surface covering for both interiors and exteriors since the fifteenth century.

Tile panels saved from a sixteenth century church

Imagery in tiles has been around since the ancient times of Babylon. Warrior images on tiles were used as a way to intimidate enemies. The Portuguese voyagers, during their explorations to the East including Africa discovered the glazed Spanish and Moorish tiles. The Portuguese later produced and added their own touch on the polished stone by depicting different designs and pictorial scenes that reflected their own culture.
These decorative tiles are beautiful, easy to clean, and reflect light nicely. I can picture them in rustic interiors…

The Timeless Elegance of David Easton

I have always loved and admired the work of David Easton, one of the elite New York interior designers. Easton is well known for his love for the Neoclassic style, and simple approaches in design and architecture. He’s a world traveler whose constant treks add to his richness as a designer in both the residential and the commercial fields.

Easton is a Kentucky native who was raised in Pennsylvania. He was educated at the Pratt Institute in New York, and continued his education by taking a program offered by the Yale School of Architecture in France.

I’m thrilled to know that Easton is going to release a new book titled: Timeless Elegance: The Houses of David Easton, with foreword by Albert Hadley. Another great book to add to my design library. On the cover of the book, I see an image of Easton’s own home.

Escape to 18th Century, France!

Yesterday I attended the French festival at the Hillwood Estate and Museum in Washington D.C. The festival celebrated Marjorie Merriweather Post’s passion for the eighteenth-century French decorative arts.

The day was filled with activities for people of different ages: music, dancing, and tours of the gardens and estate. My favorite part was a dance performed by New York Baroque Dance Company at the French parterre, where a young lady meets a gentleman who teaches her how to dance properly. Lute music was played during the performance which created a magical atmosphere!

Classic Meets Modern

I always gravitate toward rooms that portray a clean, classic, and sophisticated design that has the mix of the old and the new, a wonderful balance between the past and the present.

In designing this boardroom, Anouska Hempel Design was faced with building restrictions, which would not allow the installation of bookcases on the floor, or making any changes to the ceiling.

Creativity took precedence, in order to retain the integrity of the eighteenth-century room, furniture designer Tim Gosling collaborated by designing lacquered bookcases which were supported by a base of steel plates. In the end an exquisite and a harmonious space was created.

The Mayflower

While walking down Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C., I passed by the famous Mayflower Hotel. Of course, I went in- to me it’s always intriguing to visit historic buildings and study the interiors.

The Mayflower opened in 1925, and was designed by the New York architectural firm Warren and Wetmore, which also designed Grand Central Station in New York City. At that time, and even today, the hotel is considered the epitome of elegance and luxury; with its classic architectural details, grand chandeliers, marble floors, and antiques

The Mayflower was the place where many presidential inaugural balls took place, where foreign presidents, dignitaries and movie stars used to stay when visiting Washington. Over the years, the hotel went through many changes, and at one point, Dorothy Draper was involved in makeovers for the hotel. The hotel is now called The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel.

Cool Blues

So many times, I’ve seen interiors, especially bedrooms, where the favored color palette was blue mixed with neutrals- white, grey, beige or brown. I think its popularity stems from what the color blue stands for: truth, loyalty and honesty. Our emotional association with the blue, particularly light blue, is calmness. It’s comforting because we see it in nature, in the sky and sea, so it represents infinity.

I love soft blues; I have used it in my own bedroom. It usually makes an excellent choice in a space where natural light is limited, as it introduces lightness to the room.
Not everyone likes a blue room, how do you feel about it?

A Second Kitchen

Now that Memorial Day has passed, and summer is just around the corner, I started to think: “Wouldn’t be nice if I had the luxury of an outdoor kitchen?” What I love about outdoor kitchens is that they can be the perfect place to gather around with your family and friends for drinks while someone is handling the grill (my husband of course!).

While flipping through an old issue of Veranda magazine, I came across an article about a Georgetown townhouse that was designed by Washington, D.C. interior designer Frank Babb Randolph. The words classic and serene describe the hallmark style of Randolph’s design, where an elegant space with a second kitchen was created. That project was a collaboration between Randolph and D.C. architect David Jones.

Television Mirror

We live in times where everybody wants to be pampered, and with all the latest cutting- edge technologies available in the market, the sky is the limit. I’ve always loved the LCD- TV mirror, in which an ultra thin LCD-TV is integrated with a vanity mirror. These mirrors not only present our images, but also transmit moving images…

I’ve seen this product showcased repeatedly in design shows, even though it is generally geared more toward the commercial field, where you can find examples in hotels, restaurants, offices and spas. I think it can be a great addition to any space- they can even be waterproof, for bathrooms or kitchens.

Saladino’s Visual Art

In many of my previous posts, I have included interior images of the design legend John Saladino because of my admiration for his sense of style. His interiors never cease to amaze me; they are always distinctive, classic, and peaceful yet, powerful at the same time.

Saladino was educated at the University of Notre Dame and studied painting at the Yale University School of Art and Architecture. He is a house and garden designer, and a painter who believes in minimalism. His remarkable approach to designing interiors focuses on the layered look, the use of texture and form with reference to different cultures. He places an emphasis on clean-lined, simple, geometric shapes in furniture, which helps to create a serene look.

Saladino usually divides rooms into different zones, and focuses on light for each zone, particularly emphasizing natural light, keeping in mind the reflection of objects in the space. He adds to the sense of serenity through the use of subtle colors, putting them side-by-side in small areas so one’s eye will do the visual mixing. Saladino certainly transforms any space into visual art.

A Day at the Museum

I would like to share with you some photos I took during my last visit to The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC two weeks ago.

The museum officially opened to the public in 1941, and consisted of only one building, now known as the west building, designed by architect John Russell Pope. I mainly toured the west building, which houses treasures of American and European art and sculpture.

Enjoy the clear photos, as many of the other photos I took were unfortunately unfocused!

A Story of a House

In the midst of the forests of Normandy, France, Lillian Williams and her husband Ted found the chateau de Morsan. The chateau was built ca.1765 as a summerhouse, and at one point, it served as a hunting lodge. The exterior facade of the house reflected a French Rococo architectural style.

Lillian and Ted loved the grand house, bought it, and started the restoration process, simultaneously trying to preserve the architectural integrity of the era. As for the interiors, the owners of the chateau were inspired by the novel Dangerous Liaisons, implementing the classic style of the period.

Some of the furnishings, textiles, and colors at the chateau were of the Rococo period, but most were in the Neoclassical style that was popular under the reign of Louis XVI.

Illumination

When it comes to lighting a space, rooms usually need several layers of light, preferably through dimmers, in order to create a balance. One of these layers is task lighting, which is needed to illuminate the specific area used for a special activity such as reading, writing or grooming.
I have always loved swivel arm wall lights- they are flexible, classic, small-scale, and can be positioned wherever light is required, in any room of the house. I would like to share some images with you. Enjoy!

A Lady’s Private Space

I always fondly remember my mother’s skirted dressing table. It was a gathered skirt, made of blue and grey patterned fabric. Underneath the skirt was a pine table, which had a storage space where my mother kept her fashion magazines.

Every thing on that table was carefully selected and displayed- her perfume bottles, her make up, her hairbrushes and combs, her jewelry, and her framed family photos. With a small mirror on top which added a touch of glamour. It had the perfect look.

Skirted dressing tables have a certain femininity and lure that takes you away from everyday life, creating your own little space of indulgence. I think every woman should have one. What do you think?

The Girl in White Gloves

These are the five words Time magazine once used to describe Grace Kelly. The first half of the twentieth century was a time when Emily Post, the classic American expert on etiquette, encouraged women to wear gloves in their everyday lives, for both casual and formal affairs. In the fifties, wearing white gloves were not common in Hollywood, but Kelly, who was always properly dressed, wore her white gloves as part of her signature ladylike style.

Timeless Appeal

The art of creating busts was and still is mankind’s attempt at immortality. This sculptural three-dimensional artwork was very popular in Rome during the neoclassical period in the late eighteenth century, and it continues to be popular until today. Many collectors who love to collect both antique and reproduced neoclassical pieces incorporate these sculptures in today’s classic interiors.

I found these images of dining rooms, where busts were proudly and cleverly displayed. Enjoy.

The Great Lady Decorators

I recently purchased a great design book titled The Great Lady Decorators: The Women Who Defined Interior Design, 1870-1955. The book, written by Adam Lewis, is a tribute to all the pioneer women who became active in the field of design and interior decorating during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from Candace Wheeler, Elsie De Wolf to Sister Parish. The book contains amazing illustrations by Jeremiah Goodman, and a foreword by Bunny Williams.

In the acknowledgment page, Lewis wrote:
“It would have been a far more difficult task to write this book without Albert Hadley. He knew each of the Great Lady Decorators personally, visited their shops, and was a guest in their homes.”

Being an admirer of design icons who paved the way to establishing interior design as a profession-from whom we learn so much in their varying points of view- I can only imagine knowing Albert Hadley, let alone others like Ruby Ross Wood, Elsie Cobb Wilson, Dorothy Draper, Frances Elkins, Rose Cumming, Thedlow and Marian Hall, Syrie Maugham, Nancy Lancaster, Madeleine Castaing, and Eleanor Brown.

Sheila Bridges: Designer Living

While organizing my treasured magazine collection, an issue of Elle Decor (May 2005) caught my eye. The beautiful cover featured the work of designer Sheila Bridges. Remember her TV show? I used to look forward to watching Sheila Bridges: Designer Living on Fine Living Network; she had a sharp eye and a calm, confident way when approaching her projects. Her elegant personal design statement is achieved by mixing pieces from different periods and styles.

Bridges was educated at Brown University and at Parsons School of Design. She had been involved in designing the Harlem offices of former President Clinton, in addition to contributing in designing many high-end residential and academic institutions’ projects. Bridges has her own fabric and wallpaper lines. According to her website, she also has her own home furniture collection, which can be ordered at Anthropologie and Bed Bath and Beyond.

…by carefully examining Albert Hadley’s inspiration board at his apartment in the late 60’s, I see a modest man who loves architecture; Art Deco (especially while he was growing up, art deco was the grand style in Hollywood). I see simplicity in his vision in designing interiors. I see he’s inspired by nature, pattern and colors. I see images of people he respects and cares about including Sister Parish, David Hicks, maybe images of family members and dear friends. I see all the things that are meaningful to him.

There are some faces on the board that I didn’t recognize, any thoughts?

Outdoor Luxury

In the spring, part of the enjoyment of being outside is (if you’re lucky) having a garden as a living area, perhaps overlooking a beautiful view. Designers have always strived to create comfortable and aesthetically pleasing surroundings, and that is what luxury is all about.

Stylish outdoor entertainment venues can be created by using tents and pavilions. Fabric has a way of defining the space, either on the interior or the exterior of a home. Just a little part of the world that everybody enjoys.

When designing interiors, aside from examining the space, learning about the client’s taste, needs, and lifestyle, and before creating a furniture and lighting plan- adding architectural details to the space creates elegance, even in an empty room! I love trim work; it adds depth, texture, richness and sophistication to any space.

When I think of Scalamandré, the words quality, luxury, and history come to mind. Designing Interiors

America’s love affair with cars has started since the early 20th century. With it came the basic need to create and design cars that are both functional and visually satisfying. In designing interiors, whether the interior of a house or the interior of a car, the same design principles apply, with additional considerations such as safety issues in car interiors.

I would like to share with you this interesting video in which designer Alexa Hampton, the president of Alexa Hampton Inc. and daughter of late designer Mark Hampton, and Alexandra Dymowska, the creative designer for General Motors, discuss this topic at High Point Market. Enjoy.

Virginian Charlotte Moss

While flipping through an old issue of House & Garden magazine, which I terribly miss, I was thrilled to come across an article about designer Charlotte Moss. The article was published in October of 1991, just around the time when her book Passion for Details was about to be released.

As most of you are very well aware, Moss has exquisite taste in designing interiors. Moss opened her own design firm and shop in New York City in 1985 after having a career on Wall Street. She’s famous for her English signature designs, her elegant style, and love for color. She’s a lecturer, a philanthropist, and an astute businesswoman who has her own line of furniture, fabrics, carpets, linens and design accessories.

When it comes to defining interiors, fabrics play a large role in highlighting the character and accent of the space. With today’s advanced technology, there is a wealth of striking and durable fabrics available in the market, from classic to exotic to contemporary. You may able to view samples online, in magazines, and in books, but nothing can replace a close-up look at a fabric, when you can best view the look and feel of textural details.

A Touch of Mauve

Hotel Costes in Paris

Mauve is the color in the purple family- it is softer, and greyer. The color mauve was discovered by accident by the English chemist Sir William Perkin in 1856. Because of Perkin’s work, thousands of artificial colors were created, such as violet, blue, green and crimson. In 1858, it was considered a frivolous color; and what helped popularize this color was the fact that Queen Victoria wore mauve to her daughter’s wedding. In addition, Empress Eugénie who was the wife of Napoleon the third loved wearing mauve since the color matched her eyes.

Some people consider the use of bold colors in interiors to be intimidating, but I think the use of mauve against a backdrop of neutral backgrounds can add richness and some drama to the space.
