Escape to 18th Century, France!

Yesterday I attended the French festival at the Hillwood Estate and Museum in Washington D.C. The festival celebrated Marjorie Merriweather Post’s passion for the eighteenth-century French decorative arts.

The day was filled with activities for people of different ages: music, dancing, and tours of the gardens and estate. My favorite part was a dance performed by New York Baroque Dance Company at the French parterre, where a young lady meets a gentleman who teaches her how to dance properly. Lute music was played during the performance which created a magical atmosphere!

The French parterre, the formal gardens of the eighteenth- century where the walls of English ivy surround the low plantings, and footpaths. The garden is faced by the sculpture of Diana, the goddess of the hunt

Interesting to think about how the exterior/landscape design can give a sense of what the interior might look like...
