interesting -is that a fireplace under the stair? I sort of love it (even though I feel like I'm supposed to dislike it?). I love the playfulness of postmodernism like this.

I think it’s a fireplace, and I know what you mean…I love it because the design is unexpected and whimsical at the same time…
If you look carefully at the library, half way up the arch there is a horizontal piece of wood about 12" high.
That wood is a bridge that folds down to access the books on the high part of the arch.
I know because I walked it!
